About Me

Welcome! I’m Heather Awad, M.D. and I am in early menopause, maybe like you. Have you ever felt that menopause is a lonely journey? Don’t worry, we can walk through it together. I remember, at 48, telling a girlfriend that I was having hot flashes waking me up at night, and she said, “No you are not!” and she turned around and walked away. Is menopause something to be ashamed about? Is it a big secret? I think not. I’ve learned a lot about our bodies in menopause, and we’ll talk about it here in my blog. I love to read and talk about science, but you’ll find a lot of plain language here.
A little more about me: I’m a Midwesterner. I have lived on both coasts, but I was born in Michigan and now I live in Minnesota. I like Minnesota because there are interesting people from everywhere here, and you can go to a play or do something fun outdoors on any day of the year. I went to medical school at the University of Minnesota, and I did my Family Medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, St. Margaret’s Hospital.
I am a Family Doctor, but I like to do Medical Acupuncture, and I am passionate about teaching people how to eat healthy food to feel better.
Can you believe all those candles?
I write fiction as a hobby, but I can sometimes be talked into writing a non-fiction article, or giving a talk.
In my free time, I enjoy listening to my kids play violin, double bass, and sing. I love traveling with my husband, writing, yoga, and visiting the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
